Having purchased the previous model “XBOX 2 HDMI” in March 2023, I compared the old version with the new. After performing multiple tests with different HDMI cables & comparing the adapter to my well-reputed green “Monster” component cable, the difference in quality was immediately noticeable.
The old model delivers a visual quality equal to the Monster Component cable, which offers the best possible for the Original XBOX. Compared to other products on the market, differences are easy to spot.
Throughout the years, I’ve tried several component cables, component-to-HDMI converters, the Electron Shepherd adapters, and other XBOX-to-HDMI adapters from various companies.
I'm a collector & own 17 consoles, of which 3 are Original XBOX units. I own 2 HD flat-screen 1080p TVs that have component & HDMI connections. The idea is to use more modern tech cables, as I plan to buy a new TV soon. Modern TVs don't have component connections; the goal is to eliminate the component-to-HDMI converters.
NEW VS. OLD ADAPTER:
The graphics resolution appears lower than with the old model. The image isn’t washed out, but the textures are “paler”. Most importantly, a significant drop in the amount of details & “crispness”.
It's disappointing that the product is no longer what it was. My last purchase was mostly based on my first shopping experience of the old model, which, quite frankly, was “Very Positive”, due to its top-notch visual quality.
As the company has gained more visibility & built a good reputation over the last few years, and the positive reviews for this product (new model) on the website… It seemed like a pretty solid value, a number one choice compared to other companies.
The “Surround” audio problem has now been fixed with the new model. Besides that, it sounds the same as the old model; both produce impeccable, clear audio (no hum or background noise), an important aspect to consider when purchasing this.
Since I only use Stereo, I focused more on visual quality to compare the two adapters. Sadly, that aspect went below my expectations. It's not bad, but it was supposed to be the best, not any less.
Given that the new version is more expensive, it wasn't worth it for me. As I'm Canadian, the exchange rate, customs fees, and shipping costs make it very pricey.
The Return/Refund policy doesn't make it worth sending the item back, considering how much it would cost. I would consider doing it if Electron Shepherd sent a top-notch replacement for FREE, ensuring the product produces a visual quality as great as the old model.
CONCLUSION:
Unfortunately, there's no point using this X-OUT adapter. It feels like I shouldn’t have spent that money. Ultimately, I'm disappointed, despite my initial happiness.
The product may be sufficient for some people, especially those who haven't compared it, as they may never have owned the old model or a Monster component cable. But in my case, this doesn't meet my needs. I won't use the adapter unless my current equipment eventually fails unexpectedly. At least, I won't be completely screwed if that ever happens & would still be able to play my games.
If I can't find a decent adapter, I'd rather keep using the old model on my smaller TV, mostly for my Gameplay Walkthrough video projects. Use the Monster component cable for my living room TV. Then, continue using a component-to-HDMI converter when I have my new TV, since the ones I own produce the top-notch visual quality I want. If I find an adapter that better meets my requirements, I would choose that instead, for the reasons outlined above.
My experience is intended to help others make a more informed & confident decision.
